JHONDEE COFFEE (ジョンディーコーヒー) is a tiny hideaway coffee stand of about 7 square meters that opened in January 2024 on the 1st floor of "Residence Harada-en" at 3-15-7 Nishi-Waseda (西早稲田), Shinjuku City (新宿区), a 6-minute walk from Exit 1 of Nishi-Waseda Station (西早稲田駅) on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line. With the concept "a place that values connections between people, where everyone can feel comfortable and happy," the owner serves homemade baked goods and cakes alongside carefully made coffee and lattes. It is a small back-alley gem accessible from three stations: Waseda, Omokagebashi, and Takadanobaba.
— A back-alley spot in Nishi-Waseda for Basque cheesecake
The signature is the homemade "Basque cheesecake" (バスクチーズケーキ). Baked in the traditional Basque style with a deeply browned surface, it has a perfect contrast between the slightly bitter top and the creamy center. It is a popular hidden-gem item that brings guests back. The shop also offers hand-drip coffee, latte, and homemade baked goods (cookies, muffins, pound cake, and more) - a small cafe stand made with care. At about 7 square meters, the space is very compact, which keeps the owner and customers close - a real embodiment of the "connection between people" concept. Tucked into an alley off Waseda-dori (早稲田通り), it is conveniently reached from three stations: Nishi-Waseda (西早稲田), Takadanobaba (高田馬場), and Omokagebashi (面影橋). It is quietly loved by Waseda University students and staff, local residents, and cafe-loving strollers.
A small cafe with capacity for about 10 inside. There are 2 terrace seats at the entrance — apparently dog-friendly.
All the several kinds of Basque cheesecake are gluten-free.
I was aiming for the New Year's "Wa-no-Basque," but the period had already ended, so I had the plain. Moisture, melt-in-mouth, firmness, sweetness — everything was just right. Even I, who usually don't take sweets, didn't find it too sweet, so I think it's modestly sweetened.
The selling point seems to be the Basque cheesecake, but I want to especially mention the drinks 🥤
The iced almond milk latte was exactly to my taste ♪
Oat milk was also available.
Incidentally, my usual drink at S**bucks is iced almond milk latte — only that. Even ordering daily at the same S**bucks branch, the flavor varies greatly, and I think it depends more on the barista's skill than on bean or milk conditions. Very rarely I encounter a truly blissful flavor, but this latte exceeded that! A blissful cup with the flavor I love like a cafe mocha ♡ Here the owner served alone, so unlike S**bucks I should get the same flavor every time!
Both the bastci and the drinks — quality that makes me want to come often ✨
Waseda-dori has many shops in a row, but this one is just off the side street. Even though it's neighboring food spots, before and after are residential. Yet within walking distance of Waseda University, the inside was full of what looked like student groups at the time of my visit. Even on a very cold day (minimum temp below freezing, max in single digits), there were continuously what looked like working adults using the terrace seats — surprising. Many solo customers too, and likely many regulars — after finishing my food and drink, I could understand it all.
