JAPAN RAIL CAFE TOKYO (ジャパン レール カフェ トウキョウ) is a flagship complex cafe run by JR East. It sits in the GranTokyo North Tower (グラントウキョウノースタワー, the same building as Daimaru Tokyo) in Marunouchi 1-chome (丸の内1), Chiyoda City (千代田区), about a 1-minute walk from JR Tokyo Station's Yaesu Central Exit (八重洲中央口). It offers a Japanese tea (日本茶) tasting experience as its main attraction, along with lunch sets and seasonal sweets. The signature offering is a Japanese tea (日本茶) tasting experience, with green tea (煎茶), matcha (抹茶), roasted tea (ほうじ茶), and brown rice tea (玄米茶) served as a set so guests can compare flavors from different regions. The menu also includes lunch sets, single dishes made with ingredients from across Japan, seasonal sweets, coffee, and tea. Seating includes regular tables, counter seats, and tatami (畳) seats, giving travelers different ways to rest between train rides. Free Wi-Fi and power outlets are provided, making it suitable for business travelers as well. The information counter offers help with sightseeing across Japan and JR ticket questions, and the event space hosts occasional events about Japanese food and culture. On a trip home I passed by and kept thinking about the word "rice flour" written on the signboard… but couldn't drop in for a while. On a weekend I finally got to visit while running an errand!
My goal was the "rice-flour roll" I'd seen on the sign. The menu also has onigiri sets, grilled fish sets, toast, sandwiches, etc., and since I was hungry, I ordered an onigiri set too.
The "rice-flour roll" contains no wheat, eggs, or dairy. From three flavors — snow white, snow-country matcha, and orange mix — I had matcha. The roll batter was moist and paired excellently with the matcha — very delicious.
However, I couldn't find clear allergen displays beyond the rice-flour roll, and there were no details on the homepage either. Below the menu there's a notice saying "For allergen info, please ask staff," but the shop was crowded with a long line at the register, so I couldn't get detailed confirmation this time.
I'm gluten-intolerant, and trace amounts in things like soy sauce or dressings are usually no problem for me (as opposed to wheat itself in bread or noodles). So I ordered the onigiri set without confirmation and had no issues with my condition. But for those with severe wheat allergies or celiac disease who react even to trace amounts, since they cook in the same environment as items containing wheat, there's a risk of cross-contamination, so it would be safer to check in advance.
They're open from early morning, so it's wonderful to have one more choice for stops on the way to or from trips. I hope this can be useful as a reference for those who, like me, choose gluten-free as part of managing their health.
